  21. The Ramsey -04 chip can be replaced with the -07, and the Super DMAC -02
  22. with the -04.  This fixes two problems:
  23.  
  24. 1. Heat sensitivity.  Many 3000's will not work for more than a few
  25. minutes with an accelerator card installed, especially with several cards
  26. added to the expansion.  The rise in temperature of the Ramsey, which sits
  27. under the accelerator, causes the timing between the chips to move outside
  28. operating tolerances.  Some old chip pairs don't show this problem with
  29. modest temperature rise, and an occasional new pair DOES shows it, but there
  30. is usually a big improvement. The early chips were simply not adequately
  31. engineered.  Greg Berlin did the upgrade.

  33. 2. Speed with static column ram.  Not known generally, but the old Ramsey
  34. capability to work faster with SC ram was broken.  Also, setpatch turns
  35. this feature off.  So a lot of people who took pains to buy only SC ram
  36. were wasting their time.  To get a speedup in memory speed of about 11-12%:
  37.  
  38.   a. replace both chips.
  39.  
  40.   b. use a utility to write the byte 2F at memory location DE0003 some
  41.      time after setpatch is executed.
  42.  
  43. 12% is not a big deal, anyway.  And only memory operations are faster, not
  44. other operations.

  46. The Buster -11 may not be able to solve Z-III problems in a 3000.  For
  47. example, it is required that if you want to add the A4091 SCSI-II FAST adapter
  48. card to an early 4000, the Buster -09 has to be changed to the -11.  But when
  49. I tried to get an A4091 to work in a 3000 with the -11 (and the other new
  50. chips), I could not get transfers much beyond a megabyte before data was
  51. corrupted.  The guys who should know said this should work, and could not
  52. explain why there was a problem.  My conclusion was that the 3000 Z-III bus is
  53. a litle different than the 4000 bus.
