- The Ramsey -04 chip can be replaced with the -07, and the Super DMAC -02
- with the -04. This fixes two problems:
-
- 1. Heat sensitivity. Many 3000's will not work for more than a few
- minutes with an accelerator card installed, especially with several cards
- added to the expansion. The rise in temperature of the Ramsey, which sits
- under the accelerator, causes the timing between the chips to move outside
- operating tolerances. Some old chip pairs don't show this problem with
- modest temperature rise, and an occasional new pair DOES shows it, but there
- is usually a big improvement. The early chips were simply not adequately
- engineered. Greg Berlin did the upgrade.
-
- 2. Speed with static column ram. Not known generally, but the old Ramsey
- capability to work faster with SC ram was broken. Also, setpatch turns
- this feature off. So a lot of people who took pains to buy only SC ram
- were wasting their time. To get a speedup in memory speed of about 11-12%:
-
- a. replace both chips.
-
- b. use a utility to write the byte 2F at memory location DE0003 some
- time after setpatch is executed.
-
- 12% is not a big deal, anyway. And only memory operations are faster, not
- other operations.
-
- The Buster -11 may not be able to solve Z-III problems in a 3000. For
- example, it is required that if you want to add the A4091 SCSI-II FAST adapter
- card to an early 4000, the Buster -09 has to be changed to the -11. But when
- I tried to get an A4091 to work in a 3000 with the -11 (and the other new
- chips), I could not get transfers much beyond a megabyte before data was
- corrupted. The guys who should know said this should work, and could not
- explain why there was a problem. My conclusion was that the 3000 Z-III bus is
- a litle different than the 4000 bus.
